About ABA

What is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy?

ABA therapy is the most widely accepted therapy option for treating autism. It is based on the science of human behavior.

ABA therapy for autism is a clear and systematic way to describe, observe, and measure behavior. It is research-based, data-driven, and a proven, effective therapy option for increasing desired behaviors and achieving positive outcomes.

Why ABA Therapy?

Behavior analysis helps us to understand:

  • How behavior works
  • How behavior is affected by the environment
  • How learning takes place

The goal is to increase behaviors that are helpful and decrease behaviors that are harmful or affect learning. ABA therapy uses scientifically tested techniques to improve communication, social skills, and independent living skills and reduce challenging behaviors.

While autism remains a lifelong condition, ABA therapy has been proven to significantly reduce the symptoms of autism which interfere with a person’s ability to learn.

How Does ABA Therapy Work?

ABA involves many techniques for understanding and changing behavior. It’s a flexible treatment that can be adapted to meet the needs of each unique person.

Positive reinforcement is one of the main strategies used in ABA.

When a behavior is followed by something that is valued (a reward), a person is more likely to repeat that behavior. Over time, this encourages positive behavior change.

First, the therapist identifies a goal behavior. Each time the person uses the behavior or skill successfully, they get a reward. The reward is meaningful to the individual – examples include praise, a toy or book, watching a video, access to the playground or other locations, and more.

Positive rewards encourage the person to continue using the skill. Over time this leads to meaningful behavior change.
